here’s the thing about Darkov fathers and why Peter’s so odd:
traditionally, fathers have extremely limited contact with their children in their earliest years, and oftentimes even beyond then if the child’s skillsets take him/her to a different area than his/her parents. it’s not so much abandonment as a shifting of responsibilities, wherein the children are cared for in a community designated for that task, leaving the fathers to go do their thing (typically hunting). generations 6 and 7 began the tiny trickle of women into the hunts, so this dynamic is shifting, but the absence of fathers is still a thing.
except Peter suffered a severe injury around the time Regina was born, and wound up spending a lot of time with her. it changed him. in time, he became almost lethargic when it came to the hunts – his job – and sought ways to see his children, became such a strong presence…he fell out of love with his work and in love with being a parent.
it made him miserable, too. because he knew what his kids were going to have to go through and grow up into.
he is blamed for how soft-willed both Regina and Martin became. the kids are blamed for how unreliable Peter became.

CHILD!REGINA IS THE MOST ADORABLE THING. would you like a stuffed animal
